Snakes and Other Neat Stuff.

A few weeks ago, I was upset that a very large fox snake had big hit in the road in front of our house. They are a non-venomous constrictor and I am accustomed to seeing them around the foundation of the house. They are quite shy and tend to avoid me, so we often do a funny 'hopefully, you don't see me' routine that eventually gives way to a pursuit with camera.

Anyway, I haven't any idea how many there are. I knew there was one large one about the size of the one that was dead in the road. It wasn't until last week when we happened upon snake sex between two giants that I realized our population is likely thriving. Just yesterday, this shed skin was laying in the yard about ten feet from the house. After we photographed it, a pair of birds were messing with it and took off with the tail section.

Last week, Eric was photographing this butterfly in the yard. I was standing with my back to the hummingbird feeder and about two feet from it. We were there long enough that the hummers grew impatient and decided that they'd feed in spite of us. I was really quite tickled and stood very still for several minutes while they buzzed around. One stayed a little wary while the other grew quite bold. We may have to attempt this again, armed with a tripod.

We have been getting an absurd amount of rain. I am begining to understand what it is to live with a monsoon season. It seems that we have a shower everyday. It has been great not having to water constantly and my rain barrels are full. It also means it has been fairly humid and we are having foggy nights. Eric shot this time-lapse of the poppies with the fog rolling in one evening, after dark.

More photos are here.
